原曲は、死海から何マイルも離れているにもかかわらず、ベツレヘムに向かう3隻の船のことを指しています。
19世紀には、「I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing by on New Year’s Day」と題し、元旦に行われた結婚式で3人の美しい女性が船に乗っていたことが書かれています。
Martin Shawが編曲したものがThe Oxford Book of Carolsに、Sir David Willcocksが編曲したものがThe Carols for Choirs carol booksに掲載されている。
