Words Words Words Play Reading Series: “The History and Fall of Caius Marius” by Thomas Otway
May 15, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm| Free
Savage Rose’s eighth season begins with the next installment of our free Words Words Words Play Reading Series, The History and Fall of Caius Marius by Thomas Otway.
Thomas Otway’s 1680 tragedy The History and Fall of Caius Marius, set in Augustan Rome, is an intriguing mashup of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and a story by Plutarch from his Parallel Lives. The play is about two senators, Metellus and Marius Senior, fighting for political control. Metellus represents the old nobility, but the followers of Marius regard him as a shameful patrician. Marius Senior is a newcomer, having held power for a very short time, and Metellus wants to keep Marius Senior from continuing as a senator. After a series of physical confrontations and a heated power struggle, Marius Senior and his men are exiled. Caught in the political struggle between their fathers are two young lovers.
Come see an alternative tale of star-crossed lovers and let us know who you think did it better: Shakespeare or Otway.
